Steel rope is a most important component used on cranes and features light weight, good flexibility, wear resistance, ability to withstand impact load, no noise during high-speed operation, broken strands for omen of breakage, etc. Nevertheless, lifting steel ropes are used in various applications where they are prone to wear and exposed to high temperature baking, corrosion, etc. Improper selection, maintenance and use of steel ropes will easily cause broken ropes, resulting in fatalities or severely dangerous situations. Therefore, the use of appropriate steel ropes is of great importance.
It is extremely rare for new steel ropes and steel ropes in normal conditions to break suddenly. The main cause of steel rope damages is that the outer steel wires are gradually broken due to wear, fatigue or serious deformation in long-term use. As the broken wires increase, breakage gradually speeds up. When broken wires reach a certain limit, the actual safety factor will be reduced and further use may cause breakage of the rope. In addition, the lifting workers’ operation against the rules and inappropriate use, such as frequent overload and oblique lifting will cause the steel rope to break.
